EP142 – Colin Caruso shares his vision as a globe-trotting colour director
In this episode of the Respectfully podcast we chat wtih Colin Caruso, Artistic Director of Color for John Paul Mitchell Systems. He’s also a salon owner and client-facing colourist at Salon Caru in New Jersey. As an educator and artistic director for Paul Mitchell, Colin travels extensively both in the USA and around the world. So quite the 360º view of hairdressing! Respectfully host Nicky Pope sat down with our guest on a recent stopover he was making in London (traveling between Greece and Italy if you please). She says the conversation was super enlightening and fresh for a positive take on changes in hairdressing.
When Colin met Nicky

In the conversation on Respectfully, you’ll hear Colin Caruso share his love for the Paul Mitchell brand family. With John Paul De Joria and Micheline De Joria still firmly at the helm, the strong heritage keeps this wellknown brand much loved. As they talk, Colin explains to Nicky that John Paul Mitchell Systems is entering a new era with a fresh new look for the Paul Mitchell name, from brand packaging to messaging, and a stronger than ever commitment to environmental responsibility and inclusivity.
You’ll also discover Colin’s belief that colour is the most instant gratification you can get from a hairdresser. It gives you the power to add texture, tone, depth, shape… personality. And addressing the challenges around social media, he shares his belief that today, there is a fine line between professional and consumer. In Colin’s words: ‘… it’s about being capable or being professional?” Put in the work to be professional he believes and you’ll retain your value. As for choosing a brand to work with, the ingredients are one thing, but it’s the people behind a product that make it special. It’s about communication and having faith in the future. We love this insight.
