We know Liz McKeon as a salon business expert and founder of The International Salon Business School. But more recently Liz has taken on another role as ambassador for Shear Haven, provider of anti-domestic violence training for hairdressers. Liz joined Respectfully podcast host Nicky Pope to explain why this cause is dear to her heart, and how hairdressers can help.
[Trigger warning: the conversation does reference experience of violence suffered in a moderate way].
The proposition from Shear Haven is for salons and their teams to complete a free, online course in anti-domestic violence training. Just 20 minutes gives an insight into what might be the signs of someone being suffering from domestic abuse in some way. This is not about training to provide answers, but rather to spot the signs, initiate a conversation and perhaps enable someone to feel they can ask for help. It’s invaluable.
What’s the problem?
Stats taken from sources including Office for National Statistics and the National Centre for Domestic Violence, put the figures as being 1 in 5 adults experiencing domestic abuse in their lifetime. This equates to 1 in 4 women, and 1 in 6 or 7 men. This is staggering. To put into perspective, it makes it extremely likely that a client or a team member in the salon has or will at some point be a victim. They may feel unable to speak, to be practiced at concealing signs, but you can help. Often the victim is made to feel they are the problem. If nobody asks the question ‘are you okay?’, then perhaps they don’t feel able to speak up. How about if you could ask that question.
