For this episode of Respectfully podcast, Lisa Farrall and Casey Dale discuss the need for more inclusivity in haircare education at all ages. Lisa Farrall, owner of Wig London, and freelancer and educator Casey Dale are both accomplished and acclaimed in working with all hair types but champion in particular the joy of Afro and Black hair. Together with host Nicky Pope, they talk about where the UK hairdressing industry is in promoting the need to elevate our knowledge and skills. 

You’ll hear Casey talking about her initiative in working with schools to help pupils understand better how to care for all hair types. The Equalities watchdog has said pupils should not be “unfairly singled out” at school because they have afro hair. And has issued new guidance to help schools in England, Scotland and Wales ensure their policies on hair are not unlawfully discriminatory.

And the Equality and Human Rights Commission says policies which ban certain hairstyles without making exceptions on racial grounds “are likely to be unlawful”. This includes styles such as afros, braids, cornrows, plaits, locks and head coverings.
