EP102 Edward James talks with Nicky Pope about diversifying your salon business

Mar 13, 2023

Our guest this edition of Respectfully is a dynamic salon owner with a positivity that is infectious. Edward James talks with Nicky Pope about diversifying your salon business and share his experiences.

Edward defied his parents dreams (they hoped he’d go into engineering) and chose hairdressing as his career. But he’s not looked back. Over time, Edward has embraced all aspects of the industry. He trained in cut and colour, managed four salons for Nicky Clarke including working on product launches for the brand, and then set up his own company learning the business skills necessary, too. Today he has three salons in south London attracting a luxe clientele, with a fourth salon due to open soon.

Among plenty of nuggets of inspiration, we discover that in his salons, Edwards runs the staff arranged as two teams to ensure each person works alternate weekends. It’s been the practice for the past 10 years. Scheduling is tricky, but Edward says it’s worth it. Most recently he has launched an online consultation platform called The Hair Consult as a response to the Covid Lockdown. He runs this as an independent business free from brand ties. This is an interesting conversation!
