10 years and powering on

This launch is especially meaningful as it coincides with the 10‑year anniversary of the founding of Lions Barber Collective by Tom Chapman. It was back in September 10 2015 when Tom launched his charity after he lost a friend to suicide. Some 10 years later, despite challenges and changes which prompted the closure of the charity, Tom’s journey and mission remain unwavering. He is committed to continually finding ways to support anyone at risk or suffering.

It has not been an easy journey. There have been moments when I wanted to give it all up and never did. The Lions Barber Collective became a charity in 2018 and closed as a charity in 2024. This mission has become my purpose. We have lost people along the way, but we have also had such a positive impact on so many people, and saved many lives, that we must continue. With our remote online training I hope that we can reach people from around the globe and create safer conversations and early intervention when it comes to suicide and mental well‑being—saving lives with one conversation at a time,” says Tom.

So valuable

Drawing on the spirit and legacy of Lions Barber Collective, the HereToTalk Online Training is an accessible, award‑winning programme designed to:

  • Empower participants to engage confidently and compassionately in conversations around mental health distress.
  • Foster early intervention, crisis recognition, and emotional support.
  • Be delivered remotely, breaking geographical barriers to reach global audiences.
  • Amplify the mission of destigmatizing mental health through proactive, human‑centred communication.

Why World Suicide Prevention Day matters…

This is a global moment for solidarity, awareness, and proactive mental health action.

Casey Coleman: Class of 2025, Social Media without the fear

This isn’t your standard social media course. Nope. Our Casey is on a mission to help stylists let go of fear and perfectionism and instead learn how to bring personality to the forefront of their online presence.

Casey says: “Social media can feel really hard…until you know how to use it. Nobody wants perfect, they want personality. People relate to people, not profiles and I’m ready to show stylists how to flip the fear and finally have fun online.

What’s on the course?

For the first time, Casey will be sharing every single method he uses to connect with an audience on a deeper level. The focus? Building trust, creating loyalty and turning community into clients – monetising online platforms so stylists can step into six-figure hairstylist territory.

“It’s time to shake things up, make more money, attract more clients and, most importantly, enjoy the process.

The course promises:

  • No fluffy words. No bullsh*t.
  • Real, practical methods that have fuelled Casey’s own success in building an award-winning online platform from zero.
  • Empowerment to use the one thing nobody else has: your own unique point of view.

The 5 modules cover:

  1. Resetting your page
  2. Refocusing your content
  3. Refreshing your passion
  4. Reframing your POV
  5. Rewarding & monetising your platforms

Casey says: “If I can start from nothing and build an engaged online community that pays me back, anyone can. My goal is to empower stylists to cut through the noise, own their POV and turn it into profit.”

The Science of Colour https://hairclips.tv/the-science-of-colour/ https://hairclips.tv/the-science-of-colour/#respond Mon, 14 Jul 2025 12:25:17 +0000 https://hairclips.tv/?p=3830 We find Chaulk Education irrepressible and exciting! It’s all about The Science Of Colour. The company is headed by Sarah Spiers, an educator and colour specialist with over 30 years’ experience who is founder of Chaulk Education. And she is really making waves in the industry right now. Sarah and colleague Berndt rocked up to Colour World 2025 to share their innovative and unique approach to colour education. The crowd loved it. Now in this feature, she shares 5 game-changing insights that will transform the way professionals approach colour.

The Science of Colour: 5 Game-Changing Insights

The Science of Colour
Sarah Spiers: The Science of Colour

In a world where colour education is often shaped by brand loyalty and trend-led techniques, Sarah Spiers is leading a quiet revolution. With 30+ years of experience and as the founder of Chaulk Education, Sarah’s unique and innovative Become a Colour Master Tour reframes what it means to be a confident, creative colourist in 2025. Sarah is adamant:It all starts with science.

You can’t create confidently if you don’t understand what’s happening inside the hair,” says Sarah. “Technique alone isn’t enough; we need to know the why.”

As host of Become A Colour Master, a two-day immersive course built around what Sarah calls The Science of Colour, you can discover a brand-neutral, science-first approach that strips things back to the molecules. Only then will you build forward from the artist’s unique perception of colour.

The Science of Colour
Discover more on “Become A Colour Master”

Here, Sarah shares five core ideas from the course that are already shifting the way professionals approach colour.

  1. Hair Isn’t Just Texture, It’s Structure

Sarah begins with the biology of the hair fibre: how its genetic makeup, from coily to straight, fine to coarse, affects porosity, elasticity, and pigment behaviour. These aren’t just surface-level differences; they determine how colour penetrates, processes, and holds.

Porosity matters more than undertone in some services,” she explains. “If you don’t know how the hair behaves, you’re guessing.

Armed with this knowledge, colourists can then learn to identify how environmental factors, chemical history, and even pH shifts can alter the hair’s internal structure, and how to adapt their approach accordingly.

Chaulk Education at Colour World
  1. Read the Hair

Before a single question is asked, Sarah encourages colourists to read the hair like a map. That means assessing fibre strength, previous colour build-up, and underlying tones through a visual and tactile analysis.

“The hair is already telling you what it needs. You just need to know how to listen.” This diagnostic approach helps colourists make informed decisions from the very first touch, reducing risk, improving results, and building trust with clients who feel truly seen.

Chaulk Education
  1. Chemistry Over Guesswork

From peroxide to pigment families, Sarah breaks down what’s happening inside the tube and how those ingredients interact with the hair. Sarah stresses the importance of understanding how oxidants work, how artificial colour is made, and what active ingredients are responsible for lift, deposit, and tone.

Colour is chemistry. If you understand the ingredients, you can predict the outcome, and fix it when things go wrong, avoiding the dreaded Colour Meltdown!” With a deep dive into myth-busting around high-lift tints, bleach behaviour, and the real differences between permanent, demi, and semi-permanent colour, Sarah’s aim is for colourists to approach their work with confidence and clarity in order to give clients the best results.

Become A Colour Master
Chaulk Education at Colour World 2025
  1. pH Is the Hidden Hero

Sarah demystifies pH, highlighting how it affects everything from cuticle lift to tone longevity. She stresses the importance of colourists learning where each product sits on the pH scale and how to use that knowledge to control outcomes, especially in more high-stakes colour services such as colour correction, where this knowledge and understanding can be crucial.

“It’s not just a number on a bottle. pH is the key to control, especially when you’re lifting or toning sensitised hair.” Through experiments and visual demonstrations, Sarah aims to give colourists a deeper and thorough understanding of how shifts in pH can change the hair’s behaviour, and how to then apply this to their work.

  1. Everyone Sees Colour Differently

Sarah discusses colour perception and light theory, how our eyes and brains interpret colour, and why no two stylists see the same tone in the same way.

Even the words we use to describe colour create different images in our minds,” Sarah explains. “Part of my mission is to enable colourists to become fluent in their colour language.” By exploring how light reflection, pigment layering, and even emotional associations shape how we see and describe colour, Sarah aims for colourists to develop a personal, consistent visual language that supports effective communication and creativity.

Become a Colour Master

Each Become a Colour Master session is hosted in a light-filled photography studio, not a salon, to encourage curiosity and remove preconceptions. The course includes hands-on experiments, mindset coaching, and collaboration with partners like the YUV Colour Lab, where stylists can test pigment blends and explore colour theory in real time.

“Stylists shouldn’t be dependent on one brand’s system. If you understand the science, you can walk into any salon, pick up any tube, and know exactly what you’re doing.

The 2025 tour includes stops in Guernsey, London, Glasgow, Jersey, Manchester, and Cardiff.
